5 Great and cheap places to eat in Porto
Like many cities in Europe, the tourist traps are the greatest fear for travelers on a low budget seeking a meal. While it can be difficult to find a place that serves good food, it should not mean that you would need to pay a premium for it. Here is my list of places to have great food at an affordable price in Porto.
Gazella Entreparedes
Their signature dish is the hotdog “cachorrinho”, however, it couldn’t be more different than the regular sausage in a bun. The meat is chopped and served with “chorizo”, a strong Portuguese sausage. It is also served with melted cheese and comes in a small baguette-like bread. When they serve it, they slice it into smaller bits so it is eaten like finger food with a beer. Best fast food in town in my opinion! If you want to complete it, order a small beer called “fino” and some fries and have a delicious lunch or snack. Expect a queue if you are in a tourist-busy part of the year.

Rua de Entreparedes 8, 4000-434 Porto, Portugal
Cervejaria Gazella
Right in front of the original place, Gazella opened a smaller restaurant across the street. The food is the same but it is in a smaller building. Check this place as well should the first place be full.
Tv. do Cimo de Vila 4, 4000-434 Porto, Portugal
A Casa Guedes Tradicional
If you want a no-nonsense lunch, something to grab on the go, or if you just don’t want to spend a lot for a good lunch, this is the place. Casa Guedes offers great sandwiches and other dishes for a delicious lunch without breaking the piggy bank. If you are not a big fan of meat, they also serve fried cheese sticks, octopus legs, salads, and grilled cheese.

Praça dos Poveiros 130, 4000-393 Porto, Portugal
Maus Hábitos
One of my favorite places in Porto! More than just a restaurant, Maus Hábitos is a bar, club, art gallery, and a great place to socialize. However, their restaurant serves great food, and for an affordable price. Built in an old cinema, the Maus Hábitos is also a place where after eating you can listen to some live music, check out exhibitions or just have drinks and make friends.

R. de Passos Manuel 178 4º Piso, 4000-382 Porto, Portugal
Taberna Santo Antonio
With its very unpretentious exterior, one wouldn’t notice this restaurant when passing by. It would be a shame since many local Portuguese know this restaurant as a place with authentic traditional homemade Portuguese food made by a lady known in the neighborhood. The last time I visited Porto, this place was recommended to me by a local. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the dishes and their price despite being located centrally in the city! The food is exactly what Portuguese cuisine should be: affordable, generous in the servings, and made by warm people. A nice extra is the view point next to the restaurant which offers a great view over Gaia across the river.

R. das Virtudes 32, 4050-630 Porto, Portugal
Restaurante Universal Porto
Located north of the city center, this small restaurant is cherished by the locals. The man who runs it is a figure in the neighborhood and is passionate about serving good food at an affordable price. If you want typical Portuguese food like Bacalhau Folhada or Arroz Marisco for a low price, this is the place. Not to mention that the owner has won several prizes as one of the best restaurants in Porto, see here:
